If your church needs kneelers, you’ll want to consider them as a vital part of your church pew search–after all, most churches that use kneelers spend almost as much time kneeling as they do sitting. High quality kneelers that provide comfort and support are important to getting the best church pews for your congregation. The best church pews with terrible kneelers will make a lot of people very uncomfortable and unhappy, even to the point of not attending church services if they cause pain.

Kneeler supports, or the part that sits on the floor when a kneeler is flipped down, should be made out of solid wood to be really durable. After all the slamming up and down they might endure throughout their life, it’s important that the wood can take a lot of abuse. Oak, what we use in our church pews, is a great wood for this job because it doesn’t have much give as compared to other hardwoods and doesn’t crack or split as readily as other woods. It’s also very beautiful and matches the other parts of the solid oak wood pew supports. Kneelers should also have a support in the middle of the kneeler so it doesn’t sag or break over time.

As well as durable wood materials, the kneelers should have a sufficient amount of padding to stand up to lots of pressure. When you’re kneeling, almost all of your weight is directly on your knees, which means that the pressure is distributed over a small area than if you were sitting. Knees are also pretty fragile, especially for older members of your church, and padding is required for them to be able to kneel, let along comfortable. Kneelers should be covered in high-density foam to provide durable support that will last. We use the same high quality foams on our kneelers as our church pew seats.

When you’re selecting kneelers, asking what types of fabrics are used and connections for the kneelers to the church pew ends and supports. We use highly durable olefin fabrics on our church pew seats and kneelers and connections for church pew supports that are custom made as part of our kneelers. Because we make each piece individually and fit the kneelers to church pews, they fit perfectly without catching or scratching the church pews themselves, preserving your investment.

We’re often asked what churches should look for when searching out the right church pews. We’ve written about a lot of factors, including style and budget. But the truth of the matter is, the first place a church needs to look isn’t at church pew manufacturers but at their own church. Understanding your church’s needs is the first step to being able to get the right church pews and church seating for your church. When you’re starting your church pew search, go over these questions with your committee and discuss the needs and future of your church:

Questions About Comfort

How long are normal services?

How old is your congregation?

Do you need kneelers on your church pews?

Are church pew accessories like bookracks, cup holders, and donation slip holders necessary?

Do you want armrests?

Questions About Layout

Are there any special needs you want to accommodate, like wheelchairs?

How many church pews do you want, ideally?

Do you want church pews parallel, angled, or in a special layout?

Is a center aisle needed? Or do you prefer multiple aisles?

How wide do you want aisles to be?

Questions About Design

Is your church more traditional, conservative, or contemporary?

Is modesty or privacy a concern for church pew end height?

Do you want special decorative touches?

Do you want flat Colonial White paint or stained church pews?

What color of stain matches your church best?

Answering these questions will help you decide what’s best for your church and sort through options much more quickly than if you had no idea what you wanted. It’s easier to find the right pew with something in mind than just planning to recognize “the right one when you see it!”

All of our church pew ends are made of solid oak, which allows us to stain them to match your existing church furniture and show off the beautiful wood grain of the church pew ends. But the look of stained wooden church pews isn’t right for every church. Another option is a flat white paint effect called Colonial White. Colonial White still has a lot of options for your church pews, even if you want something more traditional in color.

Traditional style churches look great with traditional style church pews painted with flat white paint. The white pews bring brightness and are a natural choice for churches with white walls. They also harken back to long-standing traditions from colonial America, when our nation was founded on Christian principals. Having traditional Colonial White pews can make a statement to visitors about your church’s values as well as looking beautiful.

But all white can be too much for some. If all-white seems too cold for your church, you can highlight the natural wood of the armrests and top of the church pews, as in the picture above. The combination of the sharp white paint and the natural wood tones can be very attractive.

Remember, Born Again Pews also creates custom church pews. If you need something special for your sanctuary, don’t hesitate to contact us to discuss your needs.

One of the most commonly asked questions when churches are looking to buy new church pews is how long they can expect the church pews to last. The answer depends on how often the pews are used, how rough your congregation is on them, and how much maintenance you do to maintain them. In general, you can expect church pews to last a lifetime with the existing padding and fabrics but the woods can last much much longer with proper care.

Why do church pews last so long? Our church pews last because of the high quality materials we use to make them. All of the exposed wood is made of solid oak, which is an extremely durable hardwood that’s been used for centuries in furniture. You can expect the solid oak portions of your church pews to last well into the future of your church once they’re installed, just like solid oak pews from the Middle Ages are often still in usable condition today. Caring for your church pews will help it last longer too, so ensure you repair any damage done to the pews over the course of their life.

The seat of the pews is made of high quality plywood, the same quality and thickness used in high-end subfloors for homes. Subfloors constructed with the same plywood last well over 30 years in conditions much more strenuous than church services so you can expect your church pew seats to last well past that mark. In ideal conditions, subflooring can last forever and really only ever has to be replaced because of water damage, which it’s unlikely your church pews will be exposed to regularly.

The parts of the church pews that will wear out the fastest, however, are the foam padding portions and the fabrics. Olefin is highly durable and lasts for a long time. We’ve see pews go well past the 50 year mark before they were restored with new fabrics. Pew padding has come a long way since then, too, and advancements in padding allow continuous use for decades in even the most active church communities.

All in all, you can expect around 50 years of use before you need to have them restored with new padding and fabrics, depending on how often you have services and the amount of use your church pews are under. And even at that point, you only need to do restoration, which is a much less costly endeavor than replacing your pews entirely. Buying solid wood church pews is an investment in your church’s future you won’t regret. In comparison to other church seating arrangements, like chairs, church pews far exceed the competition.

Reverend Gary Watts of the Jacksonville Congregational Holiness Church in Jacksonville Alabama joined us when we finished installing new church pews to admire our good work. We love the floating pew design with the carpet runner that gives the church a modern and airy feel. These custom new church pews are made of solid oak and other high quality materials, just as all of our pews.

Jacksonville, Alabama is home to Jacksonville State University. Originally named Drayton, the town was renamed after President Andrew Jackson in 1834 and the University was established shortly thereafter in 1883. Home to the Gamecocks, Jacksonville is famous for it’s marching band, the Marching Southerners.

If you’re looking for church pews for your church with hardwood floors, this installation in Jacksonville is a good example of how well done church pews can look with hardwood floors. Because hardwood floors are made with quality woods, you’ll want to use quality woods for your church pews. If you don’t, it will look glaringly obvious that the church pews are veneers while the flooring is much better quality.

As you can see in these photos, the solid wood church pews match in color to the wood flooring. Solid wood makes this possible. Wood allows you to give a beautiful look to your church and match it very closely to ensure your church has a cohesive look.

We love this runner of carpet that gives a visual center to the church which makes it an ideal path for church goers to focus on during different parts of the church service and for events like weddings. If your church has weddings booked regularly, choosing a carpet and wood flooring scheme like this will give a visual cue for weddings as well as keeping your floor in great condition.

Last June, Moline Christian Church was struck by lightning early in the morning and the church and food pantry burnt to the ground, leaving only ashes behind. After rebuilding, the congregation at Moline Christian asked us to install new pews for them as well as some other church furniture. We were pleased to help the Moline Christian Church rebuild.

Moline is home to the oldest swinging bridge in Kansas and is quite the sight to see. Coming up in just a few weeks is the Moline Crazy Days, a town festival complete a rodeo, dance, and plenty of food and good times for all.

In Matthew 3:11, John the Baptist said “I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” While loss from fire is difficult to rebuild from, our work to rebuild after the storm and destruction is a baptism in the Lord and an affirmation of our faith. As the Bible tells us, we need to keep striving to bring the Word to others and not let worldly trials get in our way.

Part of our mission is to help churches fill worldly needs so they can pursue doing good work and passing the Word to others. We love working for the Lord this way and helping churches rebuild after tough times as well as help breathe life into churches that need new church pews. If your church has suffered from a fire and is in the rebuilding process, contact us and we can help.

Did you know that we also make mission style book cases as well as custom church pews? We make these bookcases out of the same solid oak that we use for our church pews and can finish them to match your other church furniture we build for you. They’re a great addition to any pastor’s office or church library.

When you’re looking into getting church pews, going with a company that can also build quality furniture of other types, like tables, bookcases, and chairs makes it not only easier to match all your furniture but can make it cheaper than buying pieces from a bunch of different companies. If you’re looking to price church pews, communion tables, chairs, and other church furniture, be sure to think about all the costs and time you’ll have to spend getting all those pieces from different places. You could have a different company for each one piece of furniture!

On top of the price being higher overall for your church furniture, it can take a lot more time for you to get all of your church furniture finished and in place. With Born Again Pews, we build everything and install it all in one visit. When we’re done, you have all your church furniture in place, on budget and on time. We can also make special accommodations for your church during our construction and installation process so everything is just right for you.

If you’re thinking about custom made church furniture, be sure to take a look at our past church pew installations to get an idea of what kind of work we do:

After a long drive from our shop in Twin Oaks, Oklahoma, we arrived in Lake Helen, Florida, to install new church pews in the sanctuary at the Mount Zion Baptist Church.

Lake Helen has an interesting history as a town. It was founded in 1888 by Henry DeLand, a baking soda tycoon who also founded the nearby town of DeLand. He eventually lost his fortune on losses in the orange industry in Florida but left behind a great legacy.

Named after DeLand’s daughter, Lake Helen was a resort town with two hotels. It aimed at attracting New Englanders trying to escape the harsh winters for some sunshine and grew as more and more people decided to settle in the area. However, the “big freeze” of 1894-1895 drove many people away after they lost their citrus crops to the weather, and Lake Helen never quite recovered.

Now a sleepy little town full of beautiful Victorian architecture, it’s at the crossroads for many commuters who travel to the larger nearby cities for work. You can look at some great historical photos on the City’s website of what Lake Helen looked like in her prime, as well as photos of today’s Lake Helen. You’ll notice that these buildings highlighted in the City’s photos have long wrap-around porches, woodworking details throughout the design, and traditional flat white paint.

It’s only fitting the pews that Mt. Zion Baptist Church selected reflect this same style, with traditional lines and colonial white paint. They share a clear resemblance with the buildings of Lake Helen, highlighting the Floridian twist on 1880s and 1890s style architecture.

Born Again Pews will be happy to help you to choose pews that will harmonize with the style of your church and community.

Should Church Pews Have Communion Cup Holders?

One feature that comes standard with all Born Again Pews church pews is custom made communion cup holders on the pew backs. These are small wooden holders with a circular hole that are just the right size for the standard plastic communion cups many churches use during communion services. But your church might not need these communion cups and may want to forgo them on your church pews. Determining whether or not you want communion cup holders on your church pews is just one decision in the church pew selection process.

Communion cup holders on our church pews are positioned on either side of the hymnal and Bible bookracks, as you can see in the photo above. They’re simple small pieces of solid wood that match your church pew ends in stain with small circular holes that easily fit a communion cup.

In many churches, the tray of communion cups is passed along the pew, communicants take the cup, and after taking communion, they place the empty cup in the communion cup holders.

In other churches, communion might always be taken by intinction, without cups. For these churches, communion cup holders are unnecessary.

Another factor in deciding whether or not to add communion cup holders to your church pews is the use of hymnals or Bibles. Some churches prefer to put words and music in the bulletin or project them on a screen, and may not offer hymnals or Bibles to the congregation. If you don’t use hymnals or Bibles, you probably aren’t going to get bookracks. Without the visual anchor of a bookrack, you may not like the look of the communion cup holders, especially if your church is very minimalistic in style and architecture.

Observe your church before making the decision. You may see that your congregation doesn’t make use of existing communion cup holders — or you might find that people are juggling the communion cups after use and that having holders would eliminate distractions.

We recently wrapped up installing new church pews for the Torch Hill Road Church of Christ in Columbus, Georgia. They’re the closest church to Fort Benning in Columbus and serve a lot of military families as well as families who are part of the Columbus community. We installed 27 new church pews in their church, using a light stain and dark red fabric for the seats.

This church is very simple in style, and the church pews we installed use a traditional design, perfect for a church looking to focus on the Word. The goal of Torch Hill Road Church of Christ is to learn the Word and grow in a manner that the Bible prescribes. Their comfortable new pews will help enhance the experience of worshippers.

Columbus, Georgia, is high on “Best Cities to Live in” lists, and it’s no wonder. With nearly 200,000 people, the city is situated on the Chattahoochee River and is home to museums and other cultural centers, as well as the longest urban whitewater course in the world. The city was incorporated in 1825, and was the site of the Haiman Sword Factory, which supplied broadswords during the Civil War. Today, there is an extensive military museum in Columbus, as well as an opera house, a symphony orchestra, and the Coca-Cola Space Science Center.

Between the tourist attractions and nearby Ft. Benning, Columbus has a lot of visitors, and Torch Hill Road Church of Christ is very welcoming to travelers and newcomers.

You’ll notice we also installed book racks, communion cup holders, and slots for donation cards or envelopes on the backs of all of the pews. If you’re looking for church pews with these options, keep in mind these come as a standard feature and not an add-on for all of our church pews.

We were so pleased to serve the community at the Torch Hill Road Church of Christ.

Following this installation, we got back on the road again, heading for the next church! Born Again Pews builds, delivers, and installs beautiful, sturdy church pews for churches all across the nation.

Are we coming to your town next?
